Gaddar, the renowned Telangana folk singer and activist, passed away on Sunday at the age of 77. He was suffering from severe heart disease and had been admitted to Apollo Spectra Hospital in Hyderabad for treatment.

Gaddar was born Gummadi Vittal Rao in 1946 in the Nalgonda district of Telangana. He started his career as a folk singer in the 1970s and quickly became popular for his revolutionary songs. His songs were often critical of the government and the rich, and they inspired many people to join the Telangana statehood movement.
Gaddar was also a former Maoist ideologue. He was arrested in 1987 and spent 10 years in jail. After his release, he continued to sing and write songs, and he remained a vocal critic of the government.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that he was “saddened to hear about the demise of Shri Gummadi Vittal Rao, Telangana’s iconic poet, balladeer and fiery activist.” He said that Gaddar’s love for the people of Telangana drove him to fight tirelessly for the marginalised.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao said that Gaddar was a “true revolutionary” and a “voice of the voiceless.” He said that Gaddar’s songs will continue to inspire people for generations to come.
